Lithuania 1935 ? Vaitkus photos and handwritten note

In September 1935, Lithuanian-American aviator Felix Waitkus (1907-1956) had attempted a non-stop solo flight from New York to Kaunas in a Lockheed Vega Lituanica II. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, he ran out of fuel, and was forced to crash land in Ireland; nevertheless, the flight was considered a major success (only sixth Transatlantic non-stop solo crossing), and he was given a hero’s welcome in Kaunas.

Two small photos showing Lituanica II on departure, along with the lengthy handwritten and signed reply to a letter from an aerophilatelist (Bill Schneider, a respected airmail dealer, and aviation enthusiast). The note should be of special interest to Lithuanian airmail collectors, as it clarifies the status of rare “Oro Pastas Lithuanica” overprints (Sanabria 129).

eBay Listing – Ended: Aug 2, 2010. Sold: $100

Lithuania 1922 military field post office mail

A scarce 1922 cover send to Riga from military field post office No 1 (“K. L. Pašto ?st. N 1”).
