Local Issues

Term “local post” (or “local issue”) is used to describe mail in a local post or a postal service that operated only within a limited geographical area, typically a city or a single transportation route. Local issue stamps issued in the Lithuanian territory between 1919 and 1920 were printed in cities of Raseiniai, Telsiai and Grodno. While the Telsiai and the Grodno local issue stamps were used for postal services for only short periods, no evidence exists suggesting that the Raseiniai local issue stamps ever used for any postal service. Some of local issue stamps are among the great rarities of Lithuania philately listed in major catalogs.

Raseiniai ( Rossingen ) Issue of 1919

In 1918, there was a shortage of postage stamps in the city of Raseiniai after the German Occupation Authority allowed the organization of the post-offices in Lithuania. Gardinas ( Grodno ) Issue of 1919

The 5-line overprint in Lithuanian and Belarusian languages in local currency (skatikas) on perforated (8) and imperforate (3) stamps of czarist Russia. Stamps were overprinted on March 4, 1919. Michel (Litauen) catalog numbers are Mi 2A-9A, Mi 1B, 3B and 5B.
