On 13 January 1991, the Soviet military attempted to overthrow the democratically-elected authority of Lithuania by seizing the Vilnius TV Tower and the Radio and Television Committee Building, but near the building of the Supreme Council they were stopped by the shield of unarmed people.
The Freedom of Lithuania was defended. However, fourteen defenders of the Freedom lost their lives and more than a thousand were injured by the Soviet troops.
To commemorate the victims of the struggle for the Freedom of Homeland this postage stamp has been issued.
