630 1.35 Lt – Oskar Minkowski (born 13 January 1858 in Kaunas – died 18 June 1931 in Fürstenberg) is a world famous physician and clinical scientist. His experiments conducted together with Freiherr von Mehring enabled to establish the links between the pancreas and diabetes. This gave basis for the discovery and synthesis of insulin. The European Association for the Study of Diabetes has, since 1966, awarded the Minkowski Prize for outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of diabetes mellitus.
