Description:
The Alytus Museum of Regional Studies is the largest state museum in the South of Lithuania established on the 24th of April 1928. In the pre-war period, it became famous for Ancient Days when the first attempts to arrange a temporary exhibition of articles having historical value and originating from one district have been made.
At present, the Museum contains more than 78 thousand exhibits from the fields of archeology, ethnography, numismatics, history, photography, philately, deltiology, writing, sphragistics, faleristics, art, nature as well as video, audio materials and creative heritage of Dainava Land famous people.
The first exhibits came to the oldest selection (that of ethnography) in the third decade of the 20th century after the establishment of the Dzūkai Muzeum. The exhibits of the ethnographic selection reflect a traditional material and spiritual culture of the 2nd half of the 19th century and the 20th century of peasants from Southern Lithuania. This selection contains the collections of highly valuable exquisite sashes and aprons.
The Alytus Museum of Regional Studies (the only one in Southern Lithuania) holds an archeological selection including exhibits dating from the Mesolithic Period and revealing the past of the oldest inhabitants of the Land. The stocks of the Museum include the largest collection of earrings and rings from the Alytus Burial Ground of the 14th-17th centuries as well as abundant wheel thrown and hand built ceramics and flint articles.
