About the Battle of Blue Waters
The Battle of Blue Waters is considered to be one of the most important battles in the history of the country. The army led by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Algirdas defeated the Golden Horde. According to historians, this was the victory marking the beginning of flourishing period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
In the middle of the 13th century, the vast steppes of Eastern Europe and Central Asia were settled by the Mongols Tatars, comers from the East. They established the Golden Horde, the state which was posing a constant threat to neighbouring countries.
After the death of Khan Jani Beg (1342-1357), the battle for power in the Horde began. Its neighbouring country situated onthe north-west border, the Great Duchy of Lithuania, took an opportunity to strengthen its positions in the sparsely neighboured western area located in the southern part of present-day Ukraine.In 1362 or 1363 the army of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Algirdas (1345-1377) crushed the Golden Horde forces led by Kuglug-Bey, Hadzi-Bey and Dmitry at the Blue Waters (Kirovograd Region in Ukraine) and reinforced the Duchy’s positions in Kiev and Podolia.
After the battle, the Great Duchy of Lithuania became the largest state in Europe. It extended its influence on Russian duchies and withdrew the threat of invasions from the Mongols Tatars’side to Central Europe moving the field of battles with the Golden Horde further to the East.
